SUBSIDISED training is being made available to businesses and voluntary organisations in Herefordshire and Worcestershire to ensure the needs of their deaf and hard of hearing clients are being met.
Deaf Direct has achieved funding from the Department of Work and Pensions to provide specialist training in deaf awareness and British Sign Language.
The training comes after the introduction of legislation under the Disability Discrimination Act, which protects the rights of people with a sensory impairment - giving deaf people access to goods, facilities and services.
Opportunity
"This is a great opportunity for local businesses to take positive steps to make their service accessible for the estimated 100,000 deaf and hard of hearing people across the two counties," said Philip Gerrard, director of Deaf Direct.
"We should be ensuring that local deaf people aren't receiving a second-class service"
A typical training session is an hour long, and can be delivered at a time and venue to suit.
