PLANS to extend Droitwich's Salters Shopping Centre have finally been approved following concerns about the loss of the centre's canopies.
Wychavon District Council has given the green light to Kandahar Ltd to build two new shops in the centre to house Carphone Warehouse and Argos.
Building work on the new units will begin shortly and it is hoped that the two national retailers will be open by October.
It is the first phase of a larger redevelopment of the centre which could see stores such as Next, Holland and Barratt, Pizza Express and Costa Coffee moving into the town.
"We are delighted that the first phase of this £5m redevelopment of the centre has been given the go-ahead," said Mark Phillipson, of Briant Champion Long on behalf of Kandahar Ltd.
"The wider refurbishment will see the centre transformed into a vibrant place to shop, offering a greater choice to the local community of Droitwich and beyond, as well as boosting the local economy."
