BULLDOZERS could demolish Droitwich's Lido as soon as the end of the month, claims the chairman of SALT.

Linda Watkins spoke candidly to the Advertiser following last Tuesday's make or break meeting.

She thinks the bulldozers will move in soon after the decision has been rubber-stamped by full council on February 22.

Mrs Watkins also talked of her shock at the decision of the executive board.

She thinks the council saw SALT as a "well meaning but nave action group" from the start.

"We cannot help but wonder that their offer for us to produce a plan in March 2004 was a somewhat patronising 'reward' for all the trouble we had gone to during our campaign.

"It might also shift some of the blame from the council when SALT inevitably failed to produce any credible plan," Mrs Watkins said.

She claimed councillors were surprised by their professional plan compared to those by developers Calypso and Thermae but little credit was given because of their lack of finance - something, which was never made secret.

Mrs Watkins is demanding the council admit they are an elected local authority not a public limited company and act accordingly.

"The Lido will probably not make a profit - but that's not what it should be about. It is an opportunity for the local authority to enter into partnership with local people who really care about the facility, and to develop the Lido both as an amenity for Droitwich Spa and the surrounding district.

"It should also ensure the Lido's survival as a unique part of local and national heritage. It should be a landmark attraction of which both the council and the people can be proud - not a potential liability rotting away in neglect.

"The Lido is unique to Droitwich Spa and Wychavon - its proposed replacement flowerbeds will not be," she added.
