DROITWICH Spa's Lido - one of the final pieces of the town's unique history - has been earmarked for the bulldozers.
In a shock move, Wychavon District Council's executive board voted to demolish the Worcester Road Lido at a meeting in Pershore last Tuesday night.
As a result, the proposals made by campaign group Save A Lido Today (SALT) to reopen it as a swimming pool and seasonal ice rink will never come to fruition.
The matter will be discussed once again at an overview and scrutiny committee meeting next Wednesday and the full council will agree the final decision on 22.
Following the meeting, council leader Martin Jennings said: "During a period of five years, three potential options have been thoroughly pursued. The third option has taken ten months utilising valuable resources. This, in the hope that a viable result would be to the benefit of Wychavon taxpayers."
He said following a detailed review of SALT's proposals the board recommends to the full council:
l That SALT be thanked for it's enthusiastic efforts to develop a case for the retention of the Lido facility
l However, the proposals and responses during negotiations with SALT be not supported due to very strong concerns about their scheme; particularly major financial and risk elements
l That Wychavon officers urgently prepare a comprehensive scheme for the site and its incorporation into the park.
