(Four stars)

DIRECTOR M Night Shyamalan continues his rich vein of form with this, possibly his strongest offering since The Sixth Sense.

He has gathered together a brilliant ensemble cast for a spine chilling tale which he wrote, directed and produced. Is there no end to this man's talents?

It centres around a close-knit community in an isolated village and living a simple existence.

But they also live in constant fear of the woods which surround their haven, in which dwell "those we don't speak of".

That is until curiosity gets the better of Lucian (Joaquin Pheonix) and he takes it upon himself to venture into the unknown.

This sparks off a chain of events which no-one could foresee and ends with a twist which is very clever and original.

Joaquin Pheonix, William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver lead a cast with talent oozing from every pore and it is a refreshing change to see actors who obviously believe in what they are doing.

But shining out among the stars is newcomer Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays Ivy.

Her portrayal of the blind but incredibly brave girl is the one thing that will stay with you long after you've watched the film.

Great extras are also featured on the DVD, including a diary written and narrated by Bryce, deleted scenes and background on filming.
