SHOPPERS had to evacuate Tesco in Kidderminster after a fire in a bakery oven pumped smoke around the massive superstore.

About 100 customers had to leave the Castle Road store when the electrical fire broke out at about 4.20pm on Monday.

A member of the management team tackled the blaze with a fire extinguisher and firefighters then dealt with what was left of the fire when they arrived.

The store reopened at 7.15pm that evening.

Duty manager, Richard Barnes, said: "We evacuated the site in less than two minutes.

"We decided to set the alarms off to evacuate the store because of the amount of smoke."

Sub-officer Mick Rowlands, of Kidderminster Fire Station, said the plastic coating around electrical wires had caused the store to fill with smoke.
