CHRISTIANS throughout the Vale have been praying for the recovery of Pope John Paul II.
The 84-year-old Pope who has been suffering from frail health for several years has been a patient at Rome's Gemelli hospital since Tuesday February 1 after being struck down by influenza.
Catholics in Evesham have been showing their devotion for their leader by attending special services to pray for the pontiff's recovery.
Father Peter Rogers of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in the High Street, said: "Since the news broke out prayers have been on-going. Masses have been held three times a day." Pupils and staff at St Mary's Primary School offered up prayers during their collective prayer assembly on Monday.
Anglican leaders also included the Pope in their thoughts.
Rev Richard Armitage of All Saints Church in Evesham's Market Place said: "Prayers have been said for him in the same way we would pray for any leader whether religious or political, who has led with wisdom and love."
The Rev Stephen Mullings from the Evesham Methodist Church said: "As concerned individuals within the Christian family we also offer up our prayers for the Pope."
Pope John Paul II, who has long suffered from Parkinson's disease and crippling hip and knee ailments, was expected to remain in hospital until at least today.
The Pope missed the Ash Wednesday Service at the Vatican for the first time in his 26 years as pontiff.
Reports say the Polish born Pope has regularly been saying Mass for his doctors and nurses.
