A MAN in his 30s was taken to hospital with serious injuries after his car was in a collision with a lorry.

Three fire engines and 11 police officers attended the accident, which involved a green Ford Mondeo estate car and cream DAF articulated lorry on the Kidderminster-bound carriageway of the A456 Birmingham Road.

Two ambulances and a paramedic car also attended and the county air ambulance was mobilised but had to stand down due to inappropriate weather conditions.

Firefighters rescued two people - one of which had been trapped for nearly an hour - using heavy rescue equipment and a winch.

The Kidderminster-bound lanes of the road were closed to traffic for several hours.

The driver of the car was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital by ambulance and was in a stable condition as the Shuttle/Times & News went to press.

The lorry driver, a man in his 40s from Welshpool, suffered shock.

PC Andy Saunders, of the North Worcestershire Road Policing Unit, appealed for witnesses to the accident, which happened at around 9.50am last Thursday.

He described it as a serious collision.

"I would appeal for anyone who may have seen this collision or either of the vehicles before the collision occurred to contact me," PC Saunders said.

"Very often, people think what they have seen is either immaterial or of no use.

"This isn't the case and all information, no matter how small, can be useful in finding out what happened."

Anyone with information relating to the collision is asked to call PC Saunders at the road policing unit on 08457 444888, extension 3952.
