IT is easy to understand why the award-winning production of Lord of the Flies, currently at Malvern, has achieved such critical acclaim.
This latest adaptation coincided with the book's 50th anniversary, and from the outset it was clear members of Pilot Theatre would do it justice. The opening scenes flicked seamlessly from the dramatic plane crash to the idyllic island. The accompanying music and lighting reflected the mood of the characters perfectly.
Jesse Inman was wonderful as the downtrodden, yet understandably irritating, Piggy and Alan Park's Jack switched all to easily from bossy choir prefect to murderous ringleader. The rest of the cast, including Andrew Falvey as Ralph, was equally convincing as schoolboys witnessing the darkest depths of human behaviour.
The innovative set, transformed from plane wreckage to clifftop in the blink of an eye, contributed to the magic of this production. The inevitable blood and guts following the kill of the beast also added to what amounted to an impressive production.
Lord of the Flies runs at Malvern until Saturday. For information contact the box office on 01684 892277.
