AS we celebrate loving relationships on Valentine's Day, we should spare a thought for those trapped in relationships blighted by fear and violence.

The true extent of domestic violence in the UK is not known, but surveys have indicated that there are over half a million incidents in England and Wales every year.

Staggeringly the emergency services receive one call about domestic violence every 60 seconds and on average two women are killed every single week.

Valentine's Day is also known by human rights campaigners as V Day, a day to mark the ongoing effort to stop violence against women.

For more information on how you can support our campaign to eradicate this violence, see www.amnesty.org.uk/svaw.
