The village hall was filled to capacity last Friday and Saturday nights for the performances of Daisy Pulls It Off by the West Malvern Players.
The audiences went home happy after a highly entertaining and enjoyable couple of hours portraying the adventures of Form 4B at Grange Wood Girls' School.
The play was presented to a remarkably high standard for a recently re-formed, strictly local and totally amateur group. Everyone in the cast and production team distinguished themselves, with some excellent acting and clever stage work - to stage both a hockey match and a clifftop rescue in West Malvern Village Hall was no mean achievement in itself!
While it may seem invidious to single out individuals, special mention should be made of Sarah Creber in the title role of the almost-too-good-to-be true Daisy, which she carried off with scarcely a word forgotten.
Helen Barker was outstanding as her bubbly buddy Trixie, with her joyful cries of "Jubilate", while Janet Lloyd and Kate Wheaton (who also produced the play) were excellent as the nasty sneaks Sybil and Monica. As the necklace-festooned headmistress Miss Gibson, Johnny Birks presided amiably over all in the best Alastair Sim style. A first class evening, enjoyed by all: the group's next production will be eagerly awaited.
Next Thursday, February 17, a representative of the Worcestershire Primary Care Trust will be travelling with the mobile library, which will be stationed in Park Road from 9.35am-10.05am and in Hollow from 10.10am-10.35am. With interest in the new Malvern hospital currently running at a high level, people in West Malvern will have the chance to pick up a booklet and learn more about how to make their voices heard on this vital and increasingly controversial issue.
Having had to cancel their January quiz at the last minute because of snow, West Malvern Cricket Club will hold their next quiz at the Village Hall next Saturday February 19, with all the usual popular features. Andy Dakin, fresh from his multiple triumphs as Mr Thompson, the school caretaker, aristocrat Sir Digby Beaumont and stage manager in Daisy Pulls It Off', will be asking the questions. To book tables, ring Lorna Dudley on 565422.
Finally, confirmation West Malvern Road is due to be closed to buses and HGVs from Monday for up to two weeks. The 675 weekend evening service operated by DRM will not run on February 18-19, but it is hoped the road will be open by the next weekend. Meanwhile, the daytime service operated by Newbury will run as normal, but along Cowleigh Road and Old Hollow, where there will be temporary stops by lamp posts 48 and 8 near the entrance to the Outdoor Centre.
n In an item relating to recent death of the Reverend William Barber, it was stated that his wife, Ella, was also deceased. We have been advised that is not the case and would like to apologise to Mrs Barber, who is at Podsmead Court Nursing Home in Gloucester.
