FUNDS are being raised for a plaque to commemorate a man who sang in Malvern Priory Choir for 77 years.

Jack Lewis, a builder who lived in West Malvern all his life, died in April 2003. He had sung in the choir since he was eight and £550 is needed to a buy a plaque for a pillar near the choir vestry.

Roger Wilson, a Priory chorister since 1979 and a boy chorister from 1953 to 1961, remembers Mr Lewis as a tall and striking man.

He said he was a versatile singer who mainly sang alto parts but could also sing tenor and bass.

"Jack was a very quiet, unassuming man and wouldn't have wanted all this fuss. Nonetheless I think he would have been extremely proud to have a plaque put up in his memory," he said.

Mike Selby, who ran the Priory organ appeal, is organising the collection for the plaque.

The tribute to Mr Lewis will be placed near a plaque commemorating Henry Brown, who served in the choir for 63 years during the 1800's.

Also made from wood, the new plaque would be identical in size and as close as possible in colour to the existing one.

It will be dedicated at the Malvern Priory Old Choristers' Association Evensong on Saturday, April 23.

Anyone who would like to make a donation towards the plaque should contact the Priory office on 01684 561020.
