TWO shops in Malvern are the first to benefit from a new scheme to attract retailers into the town centre.
They are Icon Menswear on Church Walk and the Bridal Gallery on Graham Road.
Both received £750 from Malvern Hills District Council's new trader support grant.
The aim of the scheme is to fill vacant premises and improve the range and quality of shops by offering a grant or a three-month rate-free period.
"Anything that helps reduce costs when you're just starting up in business is good," said Frank Connolly, of Icon Menswear, wich opened in November.
"However, the council should do much more to bring businesses in and help them survive."
Yvonne Parkin, said the opening of Bridal Gallery this month was a dream come true.
"It's very expensive setting up and getting started so I was really pleased with the scheme," she said. "It isn't a lot but everything helps."
Council leader Tom Wells said town centre enhancement was one of the council's priorities.
"We're keen to continue breathing life into the town through schemes like this," he said.
Businesses interested in applying for the grant should contact Janet Yates or Anthony Collis on 01684 862151.
