IN wet, unpleasant golfing conditions, the Worcestershire Golf Club's men's better ball Stableford competition produced some excellent results, with long-standing members of the club well to the fore.
Four pairs, former club captain Terry Price, teamed with left-handed golfer Larry Long, recently retired Roy Smith, paired with experienced golfer Brian Brassington, 'Taff' Morgan teamed with single figure handicap golfer Phil Dance, and Phil Burton paired with Mike Tubb, all returned the excellent score of 40 points, four points better than par.
On the usual count back system 'Taff' Morgan and Phil Dance came to the top of this group and were placed fifth in the competition. In fourth place, with a score of 41 points, was the pairing of young Jamie Dunster teamed with Colin Goodrum. Jamie and Colin returned the same score as long- standing members Terry Lloyd and Stan Jones. Terry and Stan, however, had a better back nine score, so they were placed third. Second place went to Nigel and 'Kip' Phillips, who returned a seven point better than par score of 43 points.
Returning the incredible score of 44 points, in difficult playing conditions, to take first place, was competition and handicap chairman Andy Davis, teamed with his usual golfing partner, Roy Cale.
Two mixed competitions have recently been held, both played on 18 temporary greens due to the adverse weather conditions.
The first, a mixed better ball Stableford competition, played off three quarters of handicap, produced some startling results. Some 64 competitors played and during the competition there were 21 birdies and seven two's recorded.
In third place, with 43 points, were Jane Ackroyd and Steve Kerry. Liz Evans and John Daly also returned a score of 43 points, but their back nine hole score was one less than Jane and Steve, so Liz and John came second.
In first place, with the excellent score of 44 points, were the father and daughter pairing of Colin and Vicky Lane.
In the second mixed competition, a mixed greensome medal, 24 couples played in very wet and muddy conditions. The early competitors also played in misty and damp conditions, while the latter competitors enjoyed bright winter sunshine.
Colin and Vicky Lane were again in good form to gain second place, returning a net score of 64, the same score as Andy Greens and April Wilding, who were placed third. The winners, however, returning a seven under par score of 64, were the pairing of Jane Ackroyd and Steve Kerry.
The ladies have recently held two 12-hole competitions. The first, a 12-hole Texas scramble, played in teams of three, saw Liz Evans, Vanessa Chesterton and Maureen Riley gain second place with a score of 23 points. The winner, scoring 26 points, was the team of Chris Urry, Di Meakin and Faya Recordon.
In the second competition, a Stableford, again played in teams of three, second place was achieved by the team of Chris Urry, Joan Haworth and Elsie Kelsall who scored 48 points.
No ladies could compete with the team led by the current lady captain, Ruth Scott, teamed with Hazel Cartledge and Jill Mico. Ruth, Hazel and Jill returned the excellent score of 51 points to win the competition by three clear points.
In the junior medal competition, played off the white tees, Charlie Griffiths came third with a net score of 73. In second place, with a net score of 71, was Will Bishop. The winner of the competition, with a one below par net score of 70, was the very promising golfer, Dan Long.
In the mini Medal competition, over seven holes, James Kerry was third, Jordan Hick second and Kyle Trapp first.
