I OBJECT to the proposed car park extension in Cripplegate Park. I feel the following matters are valid and should be taken into consideration.
I view with grave concern the loss of a much-used area of our inner city green space, part of our citiy's environment.
Once this part of our Riverside Conservation area has gone, it will be very difficult and expensive to bring it back.
This is creating a problem for the future. The council taxpayers of Worcester will have to pay for its restoration.
I gather a reason for the car park is revenue-based. Does this mean that in the future more of our inner city green environment will be taken for revenue reasons?
The park is already considered by a few to be the biggest roundabout in Worcester. The loss of the brick wall, the established trees and shrubs and yet more cars on view will only add to this.
In the Worcester Alliance Partnership booklet it states on page 4: "Seek to enhance the Riverside. Promote Worcester as a place to visit". Taking away some of our inner city green environment does not in my view enhance the riverside or encourage visitors to Worcester.
Worcester City Council is a partner in this alliance - why is it going against its own policy?
Vandalism is a problem in the park and car parks always encourage litter. I want to see my riverside environment as a place to be proud of - not an eyesore!
Having lived in St John's for more than 20 years I am aware of the traffic problems caused by cars turning into the present car park. Encouraging a further 72 more vehicles to hold up the traffic in Tybridge Street must be a safety concern.
Our city council should be encouraging park-and-ride facilities, especially on the west side of the city.
Extending this car park is only adding to the traffic burdens in the city.
