CLAIMS for compensation have flooded in from drivers with windscreens and paintwork damaged by the surface of a "diabolical" Redditch Road.
Since the Alvechurch Highway (A441) was originally resurfaced in August 2003, Worcestershire County Council has received 84 claims for damages caused by the loose gravel road surface.
Bromsgrove councillor June Griffiths said the road was a "diabolical mess" and a nightmare to travel on.
She said: "You couldn't hear yourself speak because the road surface was so rough and gravel would be flying up in all directions.''
Resurfacing last month was successful and relatively speedy, causing minimal disruption to drivers.
A county council spokesman said officers were in discussion with contractor Warco to find out why the original resurfacing work failed but in the meantime had hired a different contractor to resurface the road.
The county council has paid sixty-four claims to date.
