THE 212th meeting took place on January 26. There were 34 members in attendance with nine apologies.
President Horace Jobson welcomed everyone, especially John Bingham, attending as a guest of Vernon Munton.
Congratulations were extended to Eric Portman on his recent birthday and best wishes were extended to Tony Homer, due for a hospital visit.
After lunch, speaker and club member Olly Davidson spoke about Some Caravanning Experiences.
These began in 1964 with the purchase of a second-hand Sprite Muskateer.
Joining the Services Caravan Club (Germany) he was the "Trading Member" for two years, buying in, holding and selling items purchased from the UK.
Rallies took place in Germany, Holland, Luxembourg, Belgium and France including the first in Berlin. With the Berlin Wall still up, special authority was required to travel in the corridor.
After leaving the services in 1967, there have been four changes of vans (including one written off) as children "fled the nest".
A branch of the club was formed in England called "The Exiles." Initially rallies took place on Army and RAF bases but with most now not available, it's a field with a tap and disposal point.
The club is now 45 strong but as others retire, a second generation arrives and rally each bank holiday in places as far flung as Scotland to Kent.
John Sivyer gave the response to a very enlightening talk.
The next meeting is on February 23 with a talk by John Buchanon entitled Being Caggie Handed.
