A MOBILE speed camera site is to be set up on a accident blackspot in Alcester after workers from a nearby company said their lives were being put at risk on a daily basis.

The site site will be located on the Arden Road, which has a history of collisions and accidents - particularly on the bend next to Arden Construction, where visibility is particularly poor.

Last year, Stratford District Council gave permission for a fenced storage area outside the Travis Perkins site.

It is on a sharp bend and obscures vision for people going in and out of Arden Construction.

A mobile speed van can now park on the site at the side of the road at any time to observe and record speed and issue tickets.

Arden Construction office manager Chris Grainger said: "We're pleased this problem is finally being taken seriously and our concerns aren't being ignored. We wondered just how long it would be before someone was killed here in a collision.

"These measures are a step in the right direction but we wonder just how effective they'll be.

"Although drivers will at first slow down on this bend, visibility will still be terrible and I wonder just how conscientious people will be when the speed van isn't on site."

Alcester County Councillor Susan Juned, who has campaigned for safety work to be carried out, said she thought the van would have a positive impact.

"The speed van will serve as a warning to drivers. It will be able to park there regularly, at varying times, and will serve as a reminder to people that they should actually be driving at 30mph.

"We asked for hedging to be cut back so road signs were no longer obscured and they were and I'm still hoping to get a "slow" sign before the bend."

Warwickshire County Council and the Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership hope to begin regular enforcement in the spring.
