DEBATING SOCIETY: The society met for its annual encounter with Chipping Campden School to debate the motion -this house believes that advertising is the bane of society.
Tom Foster, head boy of the school, proposed the motion. Pointing out that the affluent nations of the world spent a quarter of their wealth on advertising in one form or another, he asked how this could be justified.
Mark Annett, opposing, declared his faith in people's ability to make choices based on good sense.
The proposal was seconded by Tara Griffin, head girl, who said advertising boosted consumerism, a spiritual evil in itself.
Seconding for the opposition Graham Greenall explored the wider meanings of advertising, pointing out that all communication is a kind of advertising.
After a lively debate the motion was carried by 35 votes to nine, with two abstentions.
