THIRTY-two shopping trolleys, 2,820 newspapers, 14 bicycles and 23 items of assorted household furniture - all these were dumped in Worcester's parks in 2004.

But it's an improvement on the year before, when the city council's four-man Ranger team collected 36 dumped shopping trolleys, 3,955 newspapers, 13 bicycles and 42 items of assorted household furniture.

This year they also retrieved 741 bags of rubbish from flowerbeds and hedges on the 306 acres of land managed by the Rangers, which includes Chapter Meadows, Lyppard Grange, Newtown Green and woodland in Tolladine, Warndon and Ronkswood.

"We've witnessed big improvements on some of our reserves as regards fly-tipping and litter collection," said Ian Yates, the council's parks and cemeteries manager.

"The Rangers are on top of historical rubbish left on our wildlife reserves and are now just dealing with day-to-day occurrences of littering. This gives us more time to survey, improve and promote these valuable spaces."
