A VALE woman has praised the Advertising Standards Authority's prompt response after complaining about receiving a mock police file from Channel 5.
Penny Dunkley, aged 50 from Clevedon Green, South Littleton was one of 30,000 people sent the promotional pack for crime show CSI: NY, three weeks ago. The folder contained information about a fictional serial killer targeting people sharing her name. It also contained graphic scenes of crime photos and post mortem reports.
The ASA received more than 140 complaints and concluded the material was distressing and offensive. It also claimed it was not made sufficiently clear the packs were advertisements. Advertisers, who said the folders were sent to those expressing interest in CSI: NY or similar shows, have been told not to repeat the approach.
Mrs Dunkley said: "Those who complained were in a minority and the ASA obviously felt Channel 5 had overstepped the mark. I've never watched the programme or shown an interest, and I'm glad I did complain. Advertisers might be a bit more responsible in future."
