CAMPAIGNERS are organising a last-gasp bid to save Droitwich Spa's historic lido.

Townsfolk are being called on to support the final chance to save the lido when Wychavon District Council meets next Tuesday (February 22).

A full meeting of the authority will be held at 6.15pm in the Civic Centre, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Pershore.

If district councillors go along with their officers' recommendations, the decision to demolish the unique salt-water pool and building will be rubber-stamped.

Linda Watkins, chairman of SALT (Save A Lido Today), says she wants townsfolk to show their support at the meeting.

She is also calling on people to lobby their ward councillors over the next few days to try and win their backing.

"It is up to the public. Come along to the meeting. I know provision has been made to cater for a lot of people, so I hope the residents of Droitwich will show their support," she said.

A massive turn-out for the meeting of Wychavon's overview and scrutiny committee on Wednesday night, which was held at the community hall on Heritage Way, showed the strength of emotion in the town.

Councillors had to decide whether to back the officers' recommendation or whether to support SALT and let them give a presentation to the rest of the council at Tuesday's meeting.

To the dismay of lido supporters, the councillors decided to back the recommendation to demolish the building.

Linda said: "I was overwhelmed by the response from the public. It was brilliant to see such wonderful emotion."

She added: "Though the decision didn't go our way, we are still hanging in there. We are hoping to negotiate further with the council."
