THE rebuilding of Malvern Priory's organ has been captured on DVD thanks to the efforts of a parishioner.

Geoff Fearnehough even climbed up scaffolding with his digital video camera to get the best shots of the instrument's interior during its restoration last year.

As a member of the Priory fundraising committee, he had seen pictures of the previous organ restoration in 1927 and watercolours painted by the organist at the time Louis Hammond.

"I thought making a DVD would be a very modern way to record the work in progress," he said.

After collecting more than four hours of footage Mr Fearnehough edited it down and produced a 20-minute DVD

Around 60 copies have been sold so far and Leigh Sinton company Nicholsons, which carried out the restoration work, has taken 30 copies of the film - 15 for staff and 15 to show to potential clients.

The film shows the organ before work started, its subsequent removal, redesign and renovation at Nicholsons' factory and reinstallation in the Priory.

A Victorian painted ceiling normally hidden by the organ features in the film, as does music by Mendelssohn and Guilment played on the rebuilt organ by Priory organist Andrew Wilson.

Priced £10, Rebuilding the Priory Organ 2004 is now available from the Priory bookstall. Proceeds will go to church funds.
