AFTER their culture visit to Bath last weekend, Upton 1st XV entertained Stourport in a friendly game.
UPTON 34pts, STOURPORT 10pts
The developing wind had a big say in the way that the game was played. Playing down the slight slope but facing the gale in the first half, Upton conceded an early penalty which Jones converted to give Stourport a three-point lead as again Upton's team took time to acclimatise to each other.
Play was very 'scrappy' with both teams giving turnovers and seldom more than one-phase rugby being achieved. Upton would work their way into the Stourport 22 only to find themselves going backwards through the wind-assisted kicks.
Gradually Upton got things moving more to their liking with scrum-half for the day Brad Raymond being a real driving force as he stretched the defence with arching runs and sniping forays. Just before half-time, full-back Nigel Watson took the ball on a reverse move to score a try following good support work and driving by the forwards to make it 5-3.
After half-time Upton really got things moving and just blew Stourport away. The wind on their backs did help Upton a little, but more confidence was evident as Rob Wynn put in some thrustful drives as the ball carrier and once again Raymond was a constant menace to Stourport as he linked well with the back division.
Five tries were scored in the second period through Caldwell, Raymond, Edwards, Carroll and Healey with Healey and Tether converting one try apiece for 34-3.
These tries were scored through Upton's dominance in all areas of play. With time running out, Stourport decided to go for one last push and managed to score a converted try under the posts to give the final score of 34-10.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Upton return to league duty when Woodrush are the visitors.
