Today's local authorities are expected to consult residents on important issues, and rightly so.
But many of them still seem to have difficulty in doing this effectively, as South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust's recent approach has shown so dramatically. I was unable to complete the trust's questionnaire, for lack of information.
I suggest there are two essentials for successful consultation.
Firstly, start the process early, before plans are formed and minds are made up.
Secondly, only consult where there are real, attainable alternatives, giving the advantages and drawbacks of each choice and being clear about what is, or is not, available.
Not long ago Worcestershire County Council's cabinet approved a policy for better consultation. I shall do my utmost to make sure it is followed and would be interested to hear views on the subject from people in Malvern. My number is 01684 574748.
Jeremy Webb, county councillor, Malvern Trinity Division.
