MALVERN pool star Andy Jones is competing for the Welsh 8 ball pool team at the European Championships in Malta next week.

Andy made his debut for the Welsh side at the European Championships in Jersey last February when the team got through to the semi-finals before falling to eventual winners England.

The championships run from tomorrow (Saturday) to next Saturday (February 26) and Andy will also be competing in the singles event.

Andy said: "I am playing well at the moment and am hoping to go at least one better in the team event and the singles. In the singles last year I lost in the last 16 to Welsh number one Kevin Jones."

Andy recently enjoyed a good run at the first event of this year's International Pool Tour in Blackpool. He reached the last 32, losing 7-4 to fellow Welsh international Craig Reynolds, and gained four ranking points in the process.

He started well and defeated Robert Rayes 7-1 in the preliminary round before defeating Mark Slater 7-4 in the last 128.

He came through a close 7-5 game against West Indies international Michael Steele in the last 64 to earn a shot at Reynolds in the last 32.
