A STRONG first half performance by Malvern U13s produced an excellent win in difficult blustery conditions.
ALCESTER U13s 5pts, MALVERN U13s 34pts
Playing down the slope in the first half, Malvern got off to the perfect start. After two minutes, a powerful run by Joe Harrison resulted in the centre going over with Francis Edwards adding the conversion. This was followed by tries from Francis Edwards and Andy Brownhill in quick succession.
The Malvern pack dominated play with their solid scrummaging and excellent ball carrying.
Strong individual running coupled with some missed tackles from the home team allowed Malvern to continue to dominate and Ryan Tolley, Will Turner and Joe Wilkes all added further tries, with Francis Edward adding a further conversion to take the half time score to 34-0.
Malvern made several changes at half-time and a now resurgent Alcester team, playing with the wind and down the slope, forced Malvern to show their defensive qualities.
Malvern showed strong tackling in open play but were unable to use their superior speed and strength to good effect.
A very competitive second half saw the only score go to the home team five minutes from time.
Michael Brooks, the Malvern U13s head coach, was full of praise for his squad. He said: "Overall this was good solid performance. Man-of-the-match in the forwards was Ryan Tolley and in the backs was James Tyrer, who showed great potential."
