VOLUNTEERS have said they are "cautiously optimistic" Cripplegate Park's car park will not have to be enlarged.
Worcester City Council announced on Tuesday that it was looking into buying existing car parking space off nearby businesses rather than eating into green space.
The Friends of Cripplegate Park, which helps tend the St John's attraction, said it was hopeful the new idea will be successful.
"I'm very pleased they are listening and very pleased they are seriously negotiating with land owners," said Linda Sammonds, chairman of the Friends.
She said more than 80 letters of objection over the scheme and that a petition against the scheme had attracted more than 1,000 signatures.
"When people are being canvassed for their opinions, they are looking at the map in relation to the rest of Cripplegate, making informed decisions and there are very, very few people who aren't wanting to sign," added Mrs Sammonds.
