LUXURY waterfront homes, pleasant tree-lined boulevards, a hotel, restaurants and pubs within a public square... these are the plans for the regeneration of a historic area of Worcester which have gone on public display.

The Berkeley Group plc wants to develop the former Royal Worcester Porcelain Severn Street and Portland Walk sites - creating around 460 homes and 260 jobs.

Portland Walk would combine offices and homes, with an underground car park. Severn Street would include an 80 to 120-room hotel overlooking the canal, homes, pubs and restaurants and another underground car park.

Other features include:

n Converting old Victorian warehouses into modern apartments

n A 60-space car park for Worcester Royal Porcelain to be built on the ground floor of a new building

n A footbridge to connect the city centre with Diglis Basin through the new development.

n The tallest buildings would be no more than four storeys high to ensure views of the Cathedral are not blocked.

n Around 77 of the 460 homes would be "affordable" - cheaper homes for the less well-off.

n Residents would be able to join a "car club" in which vehicles could be hired cheaply at short notice - a scheme to lower car ownership.

Members of the public have been invited to an exhibition at the Worcester Porcelain Museum in Severn Street to look at what the group has to offer.

"This is an opportunity for the residents of Worcester to have their say on the current development proposals," said the developer's regional planning manager Jon Neville.

"The whole thing is about public participation and we are committed to that process."

If the public response is positive, Berkeley expects to submit a planning application to Worcester City Council in the summer.

The exhibition, which started yesterday, will be open every day, until Wednesday, March 2, between 10am and 6pm

Visitors will be invited to complete forms after their visit to express their views on the proposals.
