MALVERN would have two carnival queens, the Gazette reported 50 years ago.
There was an outcry because a girl from Hereford had been appointed as Malvern's Carnival Queen.
The RRE School of Electronics, which was arranging the carnival to raise money for the hospital, had links with the Hereford Girls' Training College and chose the queen from there.
The School of Electronics couldn't choose from among its own members, since all 200 students were male.
But Malvern girls, friends and parents handed in a petition to the Gazette protesting at the choice.
The carnival committee agreed to appoint a second queen, Malvern Hospital's Queen, who was to be selected at a dance at Park View, the student hostel.
