TOWN Reserves visited high-flying Bewdley Town on Saturday and met a side very much on top of their game.
BEWDLEY TOWN 4, MALVERN TOWN RESERVES 0
Bewdley attacked from the first whistle and had Town chasing shadows for the first 15 minutes. Bewdley won a free-kick 25 yards out and Ben Drew headed-on to Lewis Poutney at the far post and he headed home for the opening goal.
Malvern battled hard especially in midfield where Finnigan, Roberts and skipper Peter Rose covered a lot of ground, linking play well and getting Town back into the match. Luck was not with Malvern however and with a minute to go before the break, Jamie Hart crossed from the right wing finding Poutney who, despite being off balance, sent the defence and goalie Mark Hooper the wrong way to score his second goal.
In the second-half Malvern brought on all three substitutes. Anthony Smith in particular had a superb game on the left wing and in defence where he cleared three efforts off the line.
Malvern did create a number of chances, the best arising when Danny James put Chris Fellows through, but his shot was just off target and did not seriously trouble former Town goalie Steve Thomas.
Bewdley dominated the closing stages as Hart headed over and Poutney beat the offside trap but shot wide when he had the goal at his mercy. Hart set up midfielder Neil Turford for Bewdley's third, and Ben Drew headed home following a corner to round off the scoring.
Despite the one sided scoreline, manager Paul Pallett took comfort in a number of good midfield performances.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Town Reserves play a are-arranged League Cup fixture at home against Ashbourne United (Staffordshire), the winners of the tie have an away game at Darlaston Town in the quarter-finals.
