MUM's the word in the Worcester News newsroom after we were inundated by scores of letters from children of all ages in our Mother's Day competition.

In just one week, letters have poured in from across the city telling us about "miracle" mums who deserve pampering on Sunday, March 6.

We now have the difficult job of choosing the five finest mothers who will receive a very special hand-tied posy of spring flowers delivered to their door in time for the special day.

Carole Ann Parker described her 83-year-old mum Dora Hancock from Laugherne Road in St John's as her "very best friend".

"She is an angel without the wings," she added.

"She has made me what I am today an I am very proud and honoured to be her daughter."

Eleven-year-old Bethany Smith said her mum Melanie from Orchard Street, off Bath Road, is "really kind, helpful and caring".

She added she had helped her through her Year 6 SATS, made her and her sister feel better when their nan died from cancer and helps children at the YMCA.

Mum-of-seven Ann Griffiths of Belmont Street in Rainbow Hill has been described by her daughter Lisa Hampton as "the best".

"She's a very devoted and loving mother and we don't know what we would do without her," she added.

"She's always there for everyone and thinks of others before herself."

But it is not just mums who have received praise.

Nine-year-old Lauren Arnold from Drake Avenue in Dines Green has nominated her dad Sam.

"He may not be a mum but he does all the things a mum would do," she said.

"My dad has been looking after me and my brother and sister for four-and-a-half years so please give him the flowers."

The deadline for the My Mum is Best competition entries has now passed.

The five lucky winners will receive their flowers on Saturday, March 5.
