FIREFIGHTERS spent three-and-a-half hours freeing two people from the mangled wreck of a car after it careered off the road near Droitwich last night.

Both the driver and passenger were seriously injured in what one firefighter described as "the worst wreckage" he had seen in his 18-year career.

The accident happened just before 9pm last night on the A38 when it is believed the Ford Escort careered off the road, up-rooting two trees before ending up 30 metres down an embankment.

The passenger, believed to be a young woman, was trapped and firefighters had to perform a careful rescue operation to free her. The driver was believed to be male.

"This was one of the most severe accidents many of the firefighters said they had ever seen," said fire service spokesman Alec Mackie.

Both were taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with serious injuries.
