DEFENDER Reuben Hazell could soon make his long-awaited debut for Kidderminster Harriers after recovering from a serious knee injury.

The 25-year-old signed for Harriers last summer from Torquay United but has yet to make an appearance for the Aggborough club because of the knee problem.

Former Aston Villa reserve Hazell has been in full training for the past week and is set to improve his sharpness by figuring in a reserve team fixture at home to Stafford Rangers next Wednesday.

If he comes through that game without any recurrence of the injury, Harriers manager Stuart Watkiss may include Hazell in his immediate first-team plans.

The player has targeted the March 12 trip to Notts County for his comeback and it will come as a welcome boost to Watkiss as he looks to lift Harriers from their position at the foot of Coca-Cola League Two.

Watkiss said: "Reuben has done really well and he's looking fit and sharp. He is very keen to get back playing and he is the sort of player who would certainly strengthen the team."

Meanwhile, Harriers striker Gary Birch could make a return prior to end of the campaign following a successful operation on his knee.

Former Barnsley and Walsall man Birch, 23, went under the knife last week to have loose cartilage cleaned from the knee joint. He is expected to require four to six weeks' recovery time before returning to the fray.
