THE shadow minister for transport and the environment, Tim Yeo MP, gave his full backing to the Abbey Stadium project when he visited Redditch.
The Tory front-bencher was in town last week to look at the proposed plans and the site itself, where it is hoped to build a huge multi-million pound leisure complex
He said: "It looks like an impressive proposal and the site lends itself well to a large development.
"If it does go ahead, it would be a valuable resource for Redditch and the region."
Mr Yeo said he understood there could be concerns about large out-of-town developments but people would have a full opportunity to express views at the planning inquiry into the project.
He said his party would also be looking to offer support for calls for a Bordesley bypass - necessary if the project is to be a success.
Mr Yeo said: "We believe the capacity of the road network needs to be expanded and we will certainly be drawing up a list of priorities for road schemes before the election.
"I think bypasses can certainly enhance the local environment where there is terrible congestion and pollution."
