THE recent report on Rubery Bowling Green and the position of the Rubery, Sheldon and John Connolly Club (RSJC) either missed or ignored some information.
In the past six years this club has spent some £15,000 on maintaining the green and as a reward has received only £1,900 from Bromsgrove District Council.
The sum does not take into account the physical labour and time expended by club members on the task. What it does cover is the cost of machinery such as mowers, spikers and sprinklers and the provision of seeds and fertilisers.
The money for this comes from members' subscriptions and the match fees paid every time they play in a match, from raffles and other similar activities.
It demonstrates the deep commitment the club has to looking after this asset ie: one of the best crown greens in the district.
Every week during the playing season and at suitable times during the winter months a working party devotes itself to its care. While an additional task has been to open up the side of the pavilion available to the footballers and the cleaning of this area. For this the council agreed to pay £7 a week but this has not been forthcoming for the past two years. Nevertheless the club has continued to undertake the duty.
With regard to having the green open to the general public, the club is only too anxious for this to take place, as they are fully aware that the green is council property. However, response to certain initiatives has been poor.
A phone number is displayed on the notice board outside the green and we would urge the public to make use of this if no member is present to unlock the gates or to approach any members at the time when matches are being played for arrangements to be made.
If you really value having this facility then please demonstrate the fact. Don't just grumble in your beards.
