RESIDENTS have slammed ambitious plans to redevelop the former Royal Worcester Porcelain site saying it would cause traffic chaos.

The narrow streets surrounding the historic site in Severn Street and Portland Walk are already crammed with cars struggling to park and residents claim any additional traffic would create disaster.

"I'm really not happy about these proposals at all," said Portland Walk resident Theresa Logan.

"It is going to cause terrible parking problems. We already struggle, with people often having to drive round three or four times looking for a space.

"We moved here more than 20 years ago because it was quiet then. If this goes ahead I don't know what we will do."

The Berkeley Group plc wants to develop the site into luxury waterfront homes, tree-lined boulevards, a hotel, restaurants and pubs within a public square - creating around 460 homes and 260 jobs.

"Already when you meet an oncoming vehicle you cannot pass and sometimes have to reverse the full length of the road," said another resident, who wished to remain anonymous. "It's ridiculous."

But residents are also concerned about their properties being overlooked plus the threat of flooding of a proposed underground car park.

Rosemarie Edwards has recently moved to the area to enjoy her retirement.

"Now I'm going to be over-looked by three-storey buildings with either office workers of people living in them," she said.

"I will have no privacy, I will not be able to go out in my garden and I will lose a lot of light to my house. I'm outraged at these plans. They are completely over the top."

Ms Edwards added: "They have not accounted for the low water table. This underground car park they are proposing will surely flood. Then where will people park."

Andrew Saunders-Davies, the chairman of Berkeley Homes Oxford and Chiltern, has said his company was keen to hear from interested parties, and all those who saw the plans on display at Worcester Porcelain Museum in Severn Street this week were given a questionnaire.

"We want to engage with the public and hear what they have to say," he said.
