GIANT Bonsai trees, with a combined price tag of around £40,000 are receiving some admiring glances from customers at a garden centre.

Japanese Bonsai are most commonly grown in their miniature form, in tiny pots, and their branches pruned into artistic shapes - but the three giant specimens on display at Webbs of Wychbold, near Droitwich, are quite a contrast.

Display manager Pete Brooks explained that the hefty price tags reflect the amount of skilled work that has gone into creating them.

"These are amazing living ornaments which have taken a great deal of care and attention to reach their peak," he said.

"The art of Bonsai is all about pruning and shaping and these are beautiful, healthy specimens.

"They would give any garden that instant 'wow' factor that many people dream of."

The 80-year-old Japanese White Pine is a staggering £19,999, while the oldest of the trio, the 149-year-old 7ft Japanese Yew is a snip at £9,999.

The 89-year-old Pinus Pentafolia stands at 12ft and will cost the owner around £1,000 per foot.
