THERE was debut delight at Donington Park for Vale racer Matt Nicoll-Jones last Sunday.
The 19-year-old started the new racing season in spectacular style when taking the chequered flag in the AVO Ginettas race, a support event for Formula 3 and the GT Championships.
Having only taken delivery of the car last Friday, there was no time for testing and the teenager feared the worst when only qualifying 23rd out 40 the next morning.
However, starting 15th on the grid for the first race he battled his way through the field to claim first place.
Victory saw him up to fifth for the final and again he showed his talent behind the wheel to win again after a close-fought and thrilling tussle.
Nicoll-Jones wasn't the only local racer at the Leicestershire track where Richard Austin impressed in qualifying before crashing out of the opening race.
However, Austin is expected to provide last weekend's double winner with some serious competition throughout the season and at the next round at Croft on May 7 and 8.
