SIXTY years ago, wedding bells were ringing for one Church Hill couple.
Margaret and Douglas Shenton, of Upperfields Close, marked their Diamond Wedding anniversary on Thursday with a surprise celebration with their extensive family.
The couple, who are both originally from Smethwick, met in 1944 at the Guest Keen Metal Folds factory, where they both worked.
They fell for each other and married at St Matthew's Church in Smethwick.
Mr Shenton, 82, continued to work for the same factory for 40 years or so before he moved with his wife to Redditch in 1977.
They have three children, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mrs Shenton, 80, said they moved to Redditch because they wanted a better place to live.
And the secret of a long marriage according to Mrs Shenton: "You've always got to pull together and stave off the arguments."
