THE plight of the puppy seen on page three of today's Worcester News is plain to see. It is desperately in need of a secure and loving home.

Its current abode, the Danemere Animal Rescue centre at Tibberton, is at present over-run with more than 40 animals - double its usual number.

And there are more unwanted animals waiting to arrive at the centre because other kennels are, apparently, full.

We have to ask: Is it the unwanted Christmas present effect coming home to roost?

Whatever!

The plain fact is that the usual avenues of help for these dogs appear to be unable to cope with the spring influx.

This is not the fault of the centres or of the animals.

We know accidents will happen in any ordered society and dogs will be dogs, but the owners of the puppy parents must take some responsibility for the plight of animals.

Perhaps one London-based animal welfare charity which houses abandoned animals has an answer - the latest technology.

They have set up a comprehensive web site which shows animals requiring new homes.

It features a virtual tour allowing people to look round the charity's shelter where they can view the state-of-the-art kennels and gain comprehensive details of the animals requiring homes.

Perhaps Danemere can extend this idea and launch themselves fully into cyberspace.

They have a web-site, but it is not comprehensive by any means.

Technology of the future could be used more fully to face the challenges of today.

The unwanted animals will be the winners.
