A WAVE of apathy appears to have swept over Vale people at the prospect of the Royal Wedding on Saturday.

Most shoppers at the Riverside shopping centre in Evesham said they were not particularly interested in the second marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles, when asked about the event by the Journal this week.

The civil ceremony between the future King and his bride-to-be is due to take place at Windsor's Guildhall.

His mother, the Queen, will not be attending the event but will be hosting a reception in Windsor Castle following a blessing in St George's Chapel.

Mother and daughter, Audrey and Julie Knight of St Lawrence Road, Evesham, said they would definitely not be putting the bunting out.

"They are getting married like everybody else," said Julie.

"They can get married as long as she doesn't become Queen. Prince Charles should not be King," added mum Audrey.

Both women said they would not bother to watch the wedding on the television.

"It's not of that much interest to us. It's other people's lives."

David Morris of Lavender Walk, Evesham, said: " I couldn't care less what they do. If he wants to gets married now his wife has died he can do."

Mr Morris said he expected Charles to succeed to the throne eventually but would like to see him abdicate like Edward VIII.

"I would like to see him, as a matter of courtesy, abdicate. I would like to see it cleanse the whole Royal Family for the next in line. Prince William should be next," said Mr Morris.

Polly Baker, of Offenham, said she was not bothered either way about the wedding.

"It's a second marriage, I'm not so interested. He's been with her a long time so why not?"

Mrs Baker said she thought the Queen should attend the civil ceremony but added that she was unlikely to watch the event herself.

Carolyn Evans, of Foxglove Close, Evesham, said: "I think it's acceptable in this day and age. Poor old Camilla has had a very good write up. It's time to give the girl a chance. They aren't hurting anyone. You have to wish them luck."

Eunice Radley, of Holmfirth, Yorkshire, who was on holiday in Broadway, was the only person who admitted to being a Royalist.

"I was a big fan of Princess Diana. I just liked her, " said Mrs Radley.

"I wish them good luck."

Patricia Bawden, from Lime Street, Evesham, said: "I think they should just let them be. As far as I'm concerned he should have married her a long time ago. They got what they deserved when they stopped them getting married."

Evesham postman Alan Lampitt said he had no interest in the wedding and would not be watching it on television.

"I don't wish them any harm but I was more interested when he married Diana back in 1981," said Mr Lampitt.

Noel Parkinson, of Greenhill, Evesham was disapproving of the Royal couple.

"She's a disaster. They don't keep their vows. I'm not a great church fan myself but would hate to think that I could lie at the altar."
