The Brewers Arms has a new landlord, who, after a very rushed takeover, managed - just! - to keep the pub open on Monday, the day previous tenants, George and Vanessa, moved out. He is Trevor Marston (no relation to the brewers), whose partner Susan should be joining him today (Friday).
A native of Wilnecote, near Tamworth, Trevor spent the first 13 years of his working life upholstering Jaguar cars in Coventry before changing tack and entering the pub and catering trade, working as barman, manager and steward in a number of pubs, sports clubs and working mens' clubs. Running the kitchen at a working mens' club, he gained a catering qualification and also met Susan, who worked there part time. Away from work, he was a member of St John Ambulance for 22 years, becoming transport officer for Staffordshire.
Trevor, who says he enjoys and appreciates village life, has plans to make the Brewers a welcoming family pub with traditional cask ales - and a smile. Food will be an important feature, with the emphasis on fresh home-cooked meals - he is particularly proud of his battered fish and chips! He is looking forward to getting to know West Malvern and its residents and getting involved in the life of the community. He also threatens to wear a tie when serving behind the bar. This may come as a bit of shock to local regulars, not all of whom are noted for their sartorial elegance!
