THE Gazette's editor noted in her column 50 years ago that the "delicate and civilising game of croquet" was shortly to be revived in Malvern.
It would be played on a special lawn outside the headmaster's study at the newly-opened Chase School.
"This is a delightful thought, for unlike most other outdoor sports, croquet is one wherein boys and girls can compete on equal terms.
"I suppose many people think it unmanly and slightly ridiculous in this jet age, but wisely Mr Garth does not agree. He is an enthusiast himself."
