A LIFE-changing double bypass has given a 58-year-old man the inspiration to take part in a 56-mile walk.
Roger Shutt had angina and the only solution was heart surgery.
The operation and aftercare he received was a success thanks to surgeons, staff and the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit in Hereford, he said.
He has decided to undertake the challenge as the unit is always looking for extra funds.
Mr Shutt will take part in a sponsored 56-mile walk between the County Hospital in Hereford and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
"I had previously never had a day's illness in my life and although I was elated at first with the success of the operation I began to doubt my own capabilities and got depressed," said Mr Shutt, aged 58, of Centurion Way, Credenhill, Hereford.
Hereford County Hospital contacted Mr Shutt to recommend its rehabilitation programme where he discovered his feelings of depression were not uncommon.
"I am much more optimistic now as my lifestyle has changed for the better. I go to a gymnasium twice a week, which I never did before. My success is all down to the staff at the rehabilitation programme. They made me a new man."
The 56-mile walk will take place over the May Day Bank Holiday and Mr Shutt is looking for as many sponsors as possible. Donations should be made payable to Hereford Cardiac Rehabilitation Trust Fund and sent to Roger Shutt, c/o 8 Severn Street, Worcester, WR1 2ND.
