THE Wild West came to the Malvern Hills on Saturday as scores of people re-enacted a trek across the Rocky Mountains to celebrate the founding of a religious organisation in the US.

A total of 80,000 people from the UK - including nearly 2,000 from the Malvern area - joined the Mormons, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints - in the mid 1800s.

Scores of the converted folk travelled, many on foot, to build the Mormons' headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, during the mid 1800s.

And in Malvern on Saturday, a total of about 120 people in period dress, pulling 10 handcarts made the less arduous trek from Belle Vue Terrace in Malvern, past St Ann's Well to the Worcestershire Beacon, to mark the 175th anniversary of the foundation of the Mormons.

"The weather was very kind to us and all those who came along certainly enjoyed it," said Elder Mitchell, of the Cheltenham branch - known as a "stake" - of the Mormons.
