N TAYLOR (Letters, Friday April 1) says the European Union is a "socialist dictatorship."
Whatever else it is, the Union is far from being socialistic. Nor is it possible to secede from dictatorship. Any member country can leave Europe.
Like some others, this correspondent is obsessed with the myth that the UK is being "taken over" by the European Union. This is absolute rubbish. The threat of absorption comes not from across the Channel but from across the Atlantic.
The US influences the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the games we play. Worst of all they tell us when to go to war.
The three so-called main parties in Britain seem prepared to tolerate American hegemony.
But what of the "United Kingdom Independent Party" - so called? Are they prepared to cease tilting at windmills (i.e. Europe), like a bunch of pathetic Don Quixotes or will they turn and face the real threat to British independence which emanates 3,000 miles away?
D E MARGRETT,
Worcester.
