A NEW radio presenter is revealed to be leading a double life - as a DJ and a sports teacher.

Starting on Monday, people across the Two Counties will be munching their cereal to the voice of Howard Bentham, who takes over the breakfast slot on BBC Hereford and Worcester.

Mr Bentham replaces Mike George, who retires at 60 next month after 13 years at the station and six years on the Breakfast Show.

Listeners need not worry that the airwaves will be silent because Mr Bentham overslept - he has breakfast slot experience on a commercial radio station.

"I set the alarm at 3.45am, so we can get the show ready.

"I'm fairly diligent about getting up, and I've never had a phone call from the studio wondering where I am," said the teacher who has a young daughter.

And nor will he have to cut the show short to make it to pupil registration - he pulls on his football boots for games lessons at a Stratford school after lunch.

To make sure there is a smooth link, his predecessor has been showing him the ropes for a fortnight.

Mr Bentham, who lives near Stratford, started his broadcasting career on Dudley Hospital Radio, before moving onwards and upwards.

"I used to live in Bromsgrove so I know the area pretty well," he added.

He has just finished the breakfast show on the commercial station, Bear 102, produced in Stratford.

He was a DJ there for four years.

He said the best part of the job was putting something together which was "live and immediate" for the audience.

He promised the show would be "informative, at the cutting edge of current affairs and local news - but also entertaining and fun."

Managing Editor of BBC Hereford and Worcester, James Coghill said his new charge was a great communicator.

"He is a man of many talents. I'm confident he will bring a passion and energy to the breakfast show that will really engage the listeners," said Mr Coghill.

The show runs between 7am and 10am weekdays.
