MY aunt, who lives in Hampshire, tells me that she understands Waitrose negotiated an arrangement with the council in Hampshire whereby the council provided town centre land and funding for the development of a new Waitrose store.
In return for this Waitrose leased the building and everyone was happy. Until, that is, the time came around for renewing the lease.
Waitrose had acquired land on the edge of the town with planning permission to develop a new store. It seems that Waitrose has not signed the new lease but are instead building their new store. Romsey now has a vacant town centre store that is available for lease to any retailer who wishes for their store to look exactly like a Waitrose store.
I am certain that many takers will be queuing up for this prime site and that the good people of Romsey will reap the benefits of their investment for many more years to come.
