IT is time the hysteria over the Lido ended. Everyone would like the site to be re-opened, but how best to do it. Certainly not just refurbished as it is.
We went swimming in the 1970s, but only once. It was an unattractive venue.
Look at it again, ignore the decay, it is shoddy. People can talk up the value of the buildings. They have no real merit, as English Heritage recorded, when they refused to list any. Go and look at it. No-one should be asked to contribute in extra rates towards restoring it.
Over the years, entrepreneurs and developers have been encouraged to make proposals. The elected officials have taken a responsible course.
In the early 1990s, we heard that a German spa company was making a proposal. It fell through, and the anti-German feeling exhibited by the 'opponents' at the time was sickening. Some 'single issue' groups feel 'if it's not done our way, then nothing is done!'
Small groups often punch above their weight, but we must not let ourselves be deceived. Financial realism must be considered.
It is also sad the SALT campaign has been hijacked by dirty tricks for political gain, but this happens when hysteria overtakes common sense.
